Fenbendazole is a broad spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic that is used against gastrointestinal parasites including giardia, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, the Taenia genus of tapeworms, pinworms, aelurostrongylus, paragonimiasis, and strongyloides. It can also be administered under veterinary prescription to sheep, cattle, horses, fish, dogs, cats, rabbits, and most reptiles.
Interestingly, in p53 wild-type CRC cells, fenbendazole induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis through the p53-p21 pathways without affecting mutant p53 expression. This effect was partially mediated by autophagy and ferroptosis.
Safety
While fenbendazole is used as an antiparasitic in dogs, it is not approved for use in humans. However, it is in a class of medications called anthelmintics that are being studied as possible cancer treatments.
